Bald Scalp – SMP

Scalp Micro Pigmentation / SMP / Hair Follicle Simulation / Hair Follicle Replication

Scalp micropigmentation (SMP) has several names such as found above.

For this description we will use the abbreviation, SMP.

What is Scalp MicroPigmentation?

SMP is a procedure where by pigments matching your hair follicle color and type are carefully mixed, then injected into the epidermis layer of your skin. Each injection is placed strategically to replicate and simulate one of your natural hair follicles.

The procedure can be used to fill in thinning or receding hair and bald areas on the scalp for both men and women.

It creates the appearance of tiny hair follicles in order to restore the look of a fuller head of hair or in the case of a bald scalp, full head of shaved hair.

Bald Scalp

For balding men, the technique will simulate a full head of shaved hair.

Studies show that SMP may even promote hair growth, but most certainly does not damage existing hair follicles.

Several treatments will be required in order to achieve optimum results.

Thinning Scalp

For thin hair it will mask, hide and camouflage the thinning area. It will look very natural and will appear like a full head of hair.

Studies show that SMP may even promote hair growth, but most certainly does not damage existing hair follicles.

Several treatments will be necessary to achieve optimum results.

Alopecia

SMP can be used to fill in areas affected by alopecia.

Hair Transplant Scars

This procedure can be used to cover and mask Hair Transplant scars

Both strip and plug harvest / transplant sights can be treated.

Is it a tattoo?

SMP is not a tattoo but similar. It is however sometimes referred to as a Hair Tattoo

SMP uses different equipment, different pigments and a different technique.

Pigments

The pigments used in SMP are designed to match the same color spectrum of shaved cut hair and so each replicated follicle will blend in with existing natural hair or with the shaved stubble on a bald scalp.

The pigment contains no additional colorants or additives and will only lighten, not discolor.

These pigments are indelible and could potentially last a lifetime, however, fading is typical due to sun exposure and so touch ups might be necessary between 3 and 10 years. (At greatly reduced cost)

Pain

While most patients don’t find SMP to be overly painful, there is some level of pain and discomfort felt during the procedure.

There are some areas of the scalp that are a little more sensitive than others to treat. These typically include the temples and the skin just above the ears. The level of discomfort increases as the session progresses, therefore several treatments will be necessary.

Will it Damage Existing Hair?

SMP will not damage hair follicles as the hair follicles are much deeper in the scalp than the pigment is placed.

Studies show that SMP may even promote hair growth, but most certainly does not damage existing hair follicles.

Results

Results are immediate.

The area may not be complete after the first session but there will be a significant noticeable difference the first time and with each successive treatment.

Most people are extremely pleased even after the first treatment.
